This oval pendant from Umoona Opal Mine & Museum holds a triplet opal measuring 9mm x 7mm. A triplet is made from a thin slice of natural opal, backed with a dark layer and capped with a clear dome of quartz or glass. The cap protects the opal and gives the stone a smooth, glassy surface. Triplets are known for showing lively play of colour, with flashes that shift as the pendant moves in the light. A triplet is not a solid opal.

Every opal is hand-selected and unique. The stone in your pendant will not be the one shown in the photo, and its colours and pattern will differ. The photo shows the design of the piece: the oval shape, the setting and the metalwork.

The oval stone sits in a smooth, polished sterling silver bezel, with the metal wrapped around the edge of the opal. A curved ribbon of silver sweeps across the top of the setting and loops around to a slim, upright bail. The bail is where a chain would be threaded.
