These oval earrings each hold a triplet opal, a thin slice of natural opal backed with a dark base and capped with a layer of clear quartz or glass. The cap protects the delicate opal layer and gives the stone a glossy, smooth surface, while the dark backing helps the opal's play of colour stand out. Because they are triplets, they are not solid opal.
