This kangaroo pendant from Umoona Opal Mine & Museum shows the animal in profile, mid-bound, with its tail sweeping down in a long curve. A 5mm round triplet opal is held in a smooth bezel at the base of the figure, so the stone sits neatly within the kangaroo's outline. The piece is made in gold plated sterling silver and hangs from a polished bail with a small decorative ring at the top.

A triplet opal is a thin slice of natural opal backed with a dark layer and capped with clear quartz or glass. The cap protects the thin opal and gives the stone a smooth, glossy dome, and the dark backing helps the play of colour show up as vivid flashes as the pendant moves in the light.
