These drop earrings pair a 10mm x 8mm oval triplet opal with a long, slim bar drop in gold plated sterling silver. The oval stone is a smooth, domed cabochon held in a plain polished bezel, which wraps the edge of the opal in a clean line of metal.

A triplet opal is made from a thin slice of natural opal, backed with a dark base and capped with a clear layer of quartz or glass. The dark backing helps the opal's play of colour stand out, and the clear cap protects the thin slice and gives the stone a glassy, domed finish. Triplets are known for lively flashes of spectral colour that shift as the earrings move and catch the light. Because the opal is layered, it is a triplet and not a solid opal.
