These oval stud earrings are each set with a doublet opal measuring 8mm x 6mm. A doublet is a thin slice of natural opal bonded to a backing layer. The backing adds strength and support, and it often gives the stone a darker background that helps the play of colour stand out. Because doublets are made this way, we describe them as doublet opal and not as solid opal.
