A pair of square cufflinks set with mosaic opal in blues, greens and purples, in silver-toned bevelled frames with bar-style fittings.
Each cufflink carries a square face of mosaic opal, made up of many small angular pieces of opal fitted closely together. The pieces flash with blue, green and violet, with sparks of orange and red showing here and there as the light moves across the surface. Every fragment catches the light a little differently, so the face looks like a patchwork of colour.
The overall body tone is dark, which lets the greens and blues stand out brightly. Fine lines between the pieces form an irregular, crazed-glass pattern. No two faces are laid out in quite the same way, so each cufflink in the pair has its own pattern.
The opal sits in a polished silver-toned square frame with sloping, bevelled sides that lead the eye inwards to the stone. At the back, an oval-ended bar fitting holds the cufflink through the cuff. This is a clean, simple style that suits business shirts and formal wear. It comes from Umoona Opal Mine & Museum in Coober Pedy.
